Changing the world -- one desktop at a time

A friend asked me why I used Ubuntu and not windows. This was my answer.
I use Ubuntu for several things.
As a secure desktop for operations like word processing, browsing, and email.
As a development environment for creating programs using Runtime Revolution for the GUI front end and the shell tools for the information processing bits. Definitely something I can't do on Windows.
As a VirtualBox host for other distros I want to look at.
To build a self contained and portable multifunction server that I can run from an /opt directory tree.
To grab all my old vinyl LPs and Cassette tapes so I can burn them onto CDs.
To try out Graphics and Audio software that I may want to use to create modules for my Dyne Live DVD setup.
To play card games.

He was amazed when he saw the power of the shell, and how easy it was to set up a fully functional LAN server on low end hardware. He now has dual boot to Ubuntu, and is learning to use the shell to manipulate his data.

I wonder what other people use Ubuntu for?

I've been using Linux for over 10 years, and decided to switch my desktop from RH9 to Ubuntu in the early years.
Now I run Ubuntu as my primary environment on both my desktop and laptop as it simply just works. I even used Ubuntu to edit my Wedding video.
On top of this I've started using Ubuntu within my company. On our server we have a LTS environment running on top of Xen that runs our internal wiki and bug tracker. We are also prototyping the next release of myPVR on top of Ubuntu.

I use Ubuntu to lower my support calls from family/friends. Since switching to Ubuntu on my home PC, my wife can more easily surf the web and use productivity apps WITHOUT calling me all the time with Windows-related problems/questions. Since switching to Ubuntu we have...
1. Experienced zero system crashes
2. Experienced a few Firefox web browser freezes but nothing terrible
3. Spent no money/time on security (though perhaps we should at least learn about Ubuntu security...)
4. Continued to work on a fast machine. We no longer suffer from the "system crawl" that Windows eventually has as more security patches/security code are moved onto the system

Basically, my wife no longer thinks about the underlying operating system and potential problems. Instead, she just works on a PC without noticing the nice little operating system driving everything.
