In my volunteer work refurbishing older computers with Ubuntu for the Digital Divide, clients often have a printer that someone gave them.
As long as the printer works, clients want to save the expense of $50 to purchase a new one, so I get the job of seeing if I can make them work on Ubuntu.
In this case, the client had a Brother MFC-3420C Multi Function Printer and was to far away for a visit, so the job entailed sending them detailed newbie instructions.
A visit to the Brother site gave me some technical instructions not suitable for my client, although I did find out that each function of the device had to be configured as a separate exercise. The wonderful Ubuntu forums, gave me further instructions, some easier than others.
I ended up with the following document, that my client was able to use to set up her printing functions and newbies may find useful. I still have to write the instructions for the scanner and FAX, but we both need a rest before I attack those.
