Changing the world -- one desktop at a time

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a 4 yo Gateway laptop with 256Mb of RAM. I boot from the Live CD, then select Install. It runs really slowly, then eventually stops and loops indefinitely. I saw some stuff on the Net about how this has happened to others, but no clear indication as to why. I thought it might be "RAM Cram," but the Ubuntu site says 256Mb is enough. Any thoughts? Have you heard of this happening? What other hardware specs would you need to know to answer?

I don't know the direct answer to your problem. What I do know is that I have hit a few problems with the Live CD install system. I have taken to using the alternate-install disk and installing using the text interface. It is not as 'nice' but much more reliable.

How more complicated is it? Would it be a problem for a Linux newbie to use or is it just a matter of being less "elegant" than the GUI version?

If you have managed to get Ubuntu to install using the live installer, then you can do it with the text one. The hard thing would be to install it with the text installer if you have never installed linux at all. IMHO :)

THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! I am posting this from my new Feisty Fawn laptop! The installer even recognized my PCCard wireless NIC, so I have an Internet connection! I used the disk then to upgrade the desktop machine from Edgy Eft. Much appreciated.

Steve,

I am really glad this has worked out for you. I'll write up the issue/solution on my blog as this seems to happen frequently.

Best wishes

AJ
